Gravel planting and productive garden

GOLD MEDAL FOR OUR 2026 SHOW GARDEN - SANCTUARY FOR A CHANGING WORLD

Designed and built for BBC Gardeners’ World Live 2026, the garden takes the ancient principles of enclosure and looks at its resilience for modern times.

Our appreciation for what a garden needs to be and how it nurtures us, continues to grow over time, and the design rationale seeks to illustrate this through a series of rooms.

A cool and serene courtyard with a simple palette of materials is a place to take respite during times of heat. The Parrotia trees link back to the early gardens of Persia, and the Ligustrum hedging with its small leaf encourages air flow. A central water feature cools the atmosphere and gives the opportunity to dunk your hands.

The space of green solace looks at our understanding of how immersion in green has a positive physical, mental and emotional impact. Carpinus hedging and mixed wild lawn cushion and soften the space, dampening outside noise and allowing calmness to spread. The single seat is painted in a red that enhances the colour green, although it is encouraged to lie on the lawn!

Reclaimed brick laid with a lime mortar evokes a Victorian walled productive garden, with microclimates on the walls maximising our ability to grow your own. Tending the earth and producing our own food has climatic and human benefits. The wild larder on the outer wall reminds us of the bounty that can be foraged in our natural environment.

Self-seeders and low maintenance planting are enclosed by traditional Taxus hedging. The soft colours blend with the reclaimed brick and are punctuated by a hit of pink from the Lychnis. Planting beds are contoured to slow and capture heavy bursts of rainfall, and the growing medium shows how gravels and waste materials can mulch, reducing the need to interfere with the natural soil biodiversity below.
